| Abstract | Poverty and inequality are two phenomena that affect negatively to an increasing part of the world population, which lead to important problems for the economies. This study assesses the evolution of poverty and inequality in the European Union using various indicators so that we can find out which is the trend that these countries follow, which ones are the poorest and the least poor countries and the most and least unequal in the distribution of income and try to see if there are certain similarities between countries in terms of their geographical distribution. This assessment is done through the use of microdata from the Luxembourg Income Study. Our results suggest an increase in both poverty and inequality in Southern European countries, together with the United Kingdom and Ireland. The countries of Western Europe show average values and the Nordic countries present the lowest values. |
