| Abstract | Major and trace element studies of five fresh basalts from DSDP Leg 37, Holes 332A and 332B, adjacent to the crest of the MidAtlantic Ridge, reveal that four of the samples can be related to derivation by varying degrees of partial melting, from a homogeneous source region. The fifth sample is derived from a distinct source region. The chemistry of the samples cannot be derived by fractional crystallization from a common parental magma. The trace element abundance levels in the source regions lie within a range of 1-2 times those of chondrites, and there is no light REE depletion. Thus the source regions appear to be undepleted. Four of the samples experienced severe fractionation of ferromagnesian elements before eruption, and one sample contains 30% cumulate plagioclase. |
