Abstract	espanolEn este trabajo, tratamos de estudiar las caracteristicas del tratamiento penitenciario desde el siglo XVII, por considerarse el inicio de la pena femenina privativa de libertad, hasta la actualidad. Para ello, se ha llevado a cabo una revision documental a lo largo de este periodo, con la intencion de poner de manifiesto diferencias entre el tratamiento penitenciario masculino y femenino. Asi, la principal conclusion apunta a que la invisibilidad de las mujeres en prision es una constante historica que parece arraigarse en la escasa representacion penitenciaria que conforman. En consecuencia, las mujeres permanecen inmersas en un sistema disenado para la poblacion masculina. En definitiva, el tratamiento penitenciario parece basarse en un enfoque sexista y estereotipado que refuerza el rol tradicional de la mujer lo que reduce sus posibilidades de tratamiento e intervencion socioeducativa. EnglishIn this paper, we aim to study the characteristics of the prison treatment since the seventeenth century, this being the beginning of female imprisonment, until today. We have implemented a documental review about this period with the intention to show differences between the male and female prison treatment. Thus, the main conclusion suggests that the invisibility of women in prison is a historical constant that seems to take its roots in their poor representation in prison. Consequently, women remain immersed in a system designed for the male population. Then, prison treatment appears to be based on a sexist and stereotyped approach that reinforces the traditional role of a woman thus reducing her chances of treatment and educational intervention.
