| Abstract | Nosocomial Infections: Coliform and Proteus bacilli currently cause 29 percent of nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections in the United States. In order of decreasing frequency, the major sites of nosocomial infection are the urinary tract, surgical sites, bloodstream, and pneumonias. This group of nosocomial pathogens are responsible for 46% of urinary tract and 24% of surgical site infections, 17% of the bacteremias, and 30% of the pneumonias. E coli is the premier nosocomial pathogen. |
