| Abstract | In arid environments of the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, such as the border between the province of Murcia and Almeria, aquifers near the surface are exploited in a variety of ways. These can be regarded as models of sustainable development, given the way they operate. More specifi cally, here we mention two main types. Firstly, the draining galleries of the 'qanat-s» type, which are known as «galleries with lumbreras» in the border between the former kingdoms of Granada and Murcia. Secondly, those that exploit the aquifers associated to the beds of Mediterranean watercourses and dry rivers by building dams below them. |
