| Abstract | The dearth of studies focusing on the avifauna of the Rio Grande do Norte State contrasts with the importance of some areas, such as the Serido region, considered priority region for bird conservation based mainly on the presence of endemic species, the degree of conservation of the area and the level of threat to birds. In this context, an inventory of the avifauna in the western Serido region, complemented by other studies in the region. Field works were undertaken during the period December 2009 to July 2012, totaling 107 days that included both the dry and rainy seasons. The surveys included direct observation through an active search, using binoculars, photographic records, the identification of vocalizations and, review of the previous inventories. Were 178 species of wild birds recorded this area. Of the 52 families reported, Tyrannidae was the best represented, with 23 species. It should be noted the record of two species (Rhea Americana Linnaeus, 1758 and Picumnus fulvenscens Stager, 1961) considered near threatened with extinction according to International Union for Conservation of Nature. The expressive richness of birds species reported from the Serido region, the degradation of its habitats, and the use of the birds in human cynegetic activities reinforce the importance of undertaking additional avifaunal studies and proposing conservation strategies in this region.
