| Abstract | Propolis is a substance, resinous in appearance, produced by the bee (Apis mellifera) widely used for its beneficial properties. There is a great deal of controversy as to how to obtain the ethanolic extracts of propolis, since this fact can definitely influence the presence of active substances in them. In this sense, the objective of the present study was to compare different procedures for obtaining these ethanolic extracts (combining maceration and ultrasound), evaluating the antimicrobial activity of the same in samples of propolis of different origins (Valencia and Romania). The analysis was carried out on 8 bacteria both Gram positive and Gram negative with pathogen potential in the food industry. The antimicrobial activity was analyzed using plate disc diffusion technique and the minimal inhibitory amount was measured by performing dilutions of the samples. There were no significant differences between the different procedures used to obtain ethanolic extracts, so it is recommended to use the method that implies less time and cost. However, if significant differences were observed with respect to propolis type. The Valencia samples were effective on 100% of the Gram positive bacteria studied; on the contrary, no inhibition was obtained in any Gram negative bacteria. Among the Gram negative bacteria studied, inhibition was observed in Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus, pathogenic bacteria commonly found in the food industry. This fact shows that propolis could be used as a potential additive in the agro-food industry because of its antimicrobial properties. |
