| Abstract | In social psychology, there is little research concerning immunizing against techniques of social infl uence. The experiment presented in this paper aims to fi ll this gap. The purpose of this research was to demonstrate that self-affi rmation connected with a positive feedback reduces the vulnerability to the “door-in-the-face” technique (reinforced self-affi rmation effect). As a result of the presented study, the general effectiveness of the “door-in-the-face” technique was replicated. It was also found that reinforced self-affi rmation reduces the effi cacy of this technique: the tendency to fulfi ll the target request among people who underwent the reinforced self-affi rmation technique was not greater than in the control group. It was also found that the vulnerability to the “doorin-the-face” technique in the group in which the self-affi rmation was followed by a negative feedback did not differ from the control group. In sum, the results obtained support the hypothesis that enhanced self-confi dence, caused by the reinforced self-affi rmation, reduces the vulnerability to social infl uence, exerted by the “door-in-the-face” technique. |
