| Abstract | Musdah is one of the Indonesian feminist figures who is quite popular and have expressed a lot of controversial statement. This controversy is due to her thoughts and opinions that are often opposed to the opinion of the majority of Islamic scholars. One of her ideas is the renewal of Quranic interpretation (reinterpreting the verses of the Qur’an). According to her, there is a bias in the classical interpretation, resulting in the lower position of women compared to men. In addition, she also mentioned that the scholars of classical interpretation interpreted the Qur’an based on the culture that developed at that time, where men are supposed to be more dominant than women. On the other hand, the main goal of Islam is to uphold justice and liberate people from any forms of inequality, including gender inequality. Musdah stressed that if there is a Quranic interpretation that does not fit with the main objective of Islam then it is necessary to be reviewed. The objective of this study is to identify Musdah’s thoughts on the renewal of the Quranic interpretation. This study uses a qualitative method by referring the literature materials and in the form of document analysis. The study found that Musdah wants, even makes, a new interpretation model. There are three basic principles offered by Musdah in the renewal of interpretation. Firstly, the principle of maqasid shariah which contains the values of justice (al-adl), the benefits (al-maslahah), the wisdom (al-hikmah), the equality (al-musawah), love (al-rahmah), pluralism (al-taaddudiyah), and human rights (huquq al-insaniyah). Second, the principle of relativism meaning that all Quranic interpretations is relative. Third, using thematic interpretation method following the Binti Syati’ approach. This study implies that the idea of renewal of Quranic interpretation by Musdah is similar to what have been stated by other feminist figures. Muslims are expected to be more careful in selecting interpretation references and prioritizing the opinion of the majority of scholars in understanding the interpretation of Quranic verses. |
