| Abstract | The effect of dielectric on Smith–Purcell (S-P) free electron laser (FEL) is researched. The dielectric material is filled between electron beam and diffraction grating. The dielectric material is a thin glass tube with dielectric constant of 4. Electron beam motions in the vacuum chamber of thin glass tube, and diffraction grating is mounted on the outer wall of the glass tube. The characteristics of S-P FEL filled dielectric material and unfilled dielectric material are studied by three-dimensional simulation method. The simulation results show that dielectric material is important for the characteristics of S–P FEL. In S-P FEL device of filled dielectric material between electron beam and diffraction grating, coherent terahertz S-P radiation at 363.37 GHz can be generated. In S-P FEL device of unfilled dielectric material, slow-wave radiation only at 191.2 GHz can be generated. This shows that the gain of S-P stimulated emission, the modulation of electron beam, and the bunching state of electron beam all can be increased by dielectric. |
