| Abstract | This chapter presents and discusses the current state of the art regarding adhesion mechanisms in characterizing durable adhesive bonds for wood composites. Particular emphasis is placed on phenol-formaldehyde (PF) and polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI) adhesives. An overview of current adhesion mechanisms is presented with an emphasis on categorizing adhesion mechanisms relative to length scale. Characteristics of wood relative to bonding considerations are reviewed, and probable mechanisms for producing durable wood adhesive bonds are discussed. |
