| Abstract | Nurses' feelings are regarded as essential for care, since it has to do with the understanding of the patient and his or her experience of their own illness, injury or disability. Nurses' feelings within care have been studied less in homecare, than with nurses working in institutions like nursing homes and hospitals. Homecare has been given an increased responsibility for more elderly, and patient’s with a greater need for medical care than in the past. One reason for this is that there has been an increase in the number of recipients, more than 6 percent, within health care in the period 2007-2011, where homecare has had the largest increase (Gabrielsen et al. 2012). Homecare nurses have high requirements of independence as they often find themselves alone in challenging situations. The purpose of this project was to illuminate the emotional challenges the nurse’s experience in homecare. The data is collected using semi -structured individual interviews. The sample consisted of 11 homecare nurses. Of these were seven informants from two smaller municipalities, and four informants from a larger municipality. The material is analyzed by meaning condensation. Findings and interpretations show that homecare nurses experienced several emotional challenges that could arise throughout the workday. The findings outlined three main categories where informants felt most challenged emotionally, time pressure, provoked by the patient's behavior and death. Time pressure led to feelings of inadequacy and feelings of shame or guilt when care with reduced quality was exercised. Furthermore, some of the interviewees chose to compensate for the lack of time they had the previous day by performing several chores the user wasn´t entitled to. When informants were provoked by patient’s behavior, informants found it challenging to act according to their views of professionalism. Likewise the feeling of being provoked could include the informants' valuation for both herself and the patient. The deaths of patient could lead the informants to experience a special closeness with the users, in that they felt a common goal to work together for a dignified death. Being close to a patient was still demanding and could feel overwhelming when the informants identified with the user and the distinction between user and informant could become blurred. The project concludes that emotional challenges arise when informants meet other people’s vulnerability, and through this meeting also experience their own vulnerability. Furthermore, the findings and interpretations indicate that homecare nurses handling of emotional challenges can be linked to whether or not users are safeguarded. |
