| Abstract | Martial, the best of the Roman epigrammatists, was born in Bilbilis, a little place in the North of Hispania. In Rome he took up a style of poetry which criticized with a big sense of humour the society of his time. However, Martial’s epigram also includes some of the themes of the «poetry of occasion» which deals with topics such as the banquet, the death, the passage of the time, the retirement, etc. Poem 11, 52 raises the theme of the vocatio ad cenam, the invitation to dinner addressed to his friend Julius Cerialis. The poet offers, after daily meetings in the baths, a frugal dinner in which there will be moderate drink, quiet conversation between friends and declamation of literary compositions. Everything as part of a simple and specifically Roman lifestyle now restored by the Flavius and Antoninus emperors after the excesses during Nero’s period. |
