| Abstract | This dissertation is linked to the research field “Theory, criticism and history of translation", focusing on matters of translated literature. The essay attempts to realize a retranslation with commentary of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories "Loss of Breath", "Mystification" and "Mellonta Tauta" into the Brazilian Portuguese. These works remain virtually unknown to the Brazilian public although Poe is one of the most widely read and translated American authors in Brazil. The works of Edgar Allan Poe have been translated several times, some of his short stories have more than twenty translations into Brazilian Portuguese. In fact, all his works in prose and verse were translated in 1944 by Oscar Mendes and Milton Amado, and taking into account the reflections of Antoine Berman's essays on retranslation (1995;2012), it establishes a dialog between the translated works and the original. The critical studies on publishing contexts and Poe's literature are considered indispensable to the discussion and commentaries as well as the notes of Berman on the foreign reception and several conceptual guidelines. |
