| Abstract | The heating capacity control for heat pumps in heating mode in the residential sector constitute one of the means to improve seasonal energy efficiencies compared to existing heating systems. The two-compressor technology has been identified as both energy efficient and available for europeans OEMs. Four major results have been obtained. -Through a serie of tests at partial load, cycling losses have been shown in heating and cooling modes of existing air/water systems with a single compressor. Sole the energy consumption when the heat pump is at rest contributes significantly to energy losses at partial load. - Enegy gains, by adapting the two-compressor technology on a reference equipment have been quantified on a prototype heat pump developped during thoses studies. - A dynamic model for the calculation of seasonal COP has been developped. - The optimization of the compressor operation, and the defrosting process, has permitted an increase in the seasonal COP from 14,7% to 18,6% depending on the climatic conditions. This study includes design, experimental and modeling works. The design of a heat pump equiped with two compressors has required to develop a new test at partial load. The large number of exploratory and standardized tests have permitted to characterize an existing heat pump and a heat pump equiped with two compressors whatever the operation mode and the climatic conditions |
