| Abstract | Material and methods: a multivariate statistical study was carried out in the North of Spain on a total of 1,175 children in the 15 most important maternity hospitals in Aragon, La Rioja, Basque country, Navarra, Cantabria and Soria. Objectives: this study aims to discover the maternal characteristics and the perinatal factors which surround the mother-son relationship in those cases in which breastfeeding goes on for more or for less time than average. In order to do this, two descriptive multivariate techniques were applied: Multiple Correspondence Analysis and Cluster Analysis. Results: global difficult and especially caesarean births, the systematic delivery of pacifying aid and being put on the breast late seem to be the three factors which most affect breast feeding in a negative way in our environment. Breastfeeding may be promoted by Small Hospitals (< 1,000 births every year). Conclusion: the decision to breastfeed a child or to use artificial methods is clearly a multifactorial phenomenon. |
