| Abstract | Considering the relevance of table grape in the north of Chile and constrains associated to soils with low organic matter content, it becomes necessary to use organic amendments to improve soil physical conditions with the purpose of increasing or maintaining yields over time. The present work assessed the synergic action of compost with a cover crop, evaluating soil physical properties and some development variables of Vitis vinifera. The study was conducted in Vicuña, Coquimbo Region, on a Typic Haplocambid cultivated with table grape, variety Queen Rose. Considering as experimental units 7 plants in a row, compost (5,7 ton ha) applications in November 2014 and the sowing of broad bean (500.000 plants ha) was carried out in May 2015. Treatments were defined as control (T0), soil conditioned with compost (T1) and soil conditioned with compost and cover crop (T2). After six months (September 2015) it was evaluated by genetic horizons the bulk density, pore size distribution, mechanical strength, stability of micro aggregates and hydraulic conductivity; while yield and root growth were evaluated in the vine. The managements generated a tendency to increase the available water of soil, reaching at 0-60 cm depth, levels of 61.8; 70.3 and 67.4 mm in treatments T0, T1 and T2 respectively. Also the coarse porosity increased on soil surface, especially with compost, although the greater porous continuity was generated by the treatment of compost with broad bean, which achieved the highest levels of hydraulic conductivity, with values of 2.3; 3.5 and 6.9 cm h in T0, T1 and T2, respectively. The mechanical strength, in general showed values below 80 N. Finally, there was an increase in the cluster weight in T1 of 5,9 % compared to the control treatment, although without significant differences. Therefore, it is necessary to continue studying cover crop alternatives to enhance the effect of compost on soil physical properties. |
