| Abstract | Aims: To study the prevalence of hemorrhoids and anal fissures in the etiology of inaugural proctalgia at Cocody University Hospital. Materials and methods: prospective study (1 January 2001 to 31 July 2005) in proctology unit, included 100 consecutive patients complaining of inaugural proctalgia. Among them, 26 were then randomly and compared with 28 controls. All patients underwent proctology examination. Results: Patients were aged 18-76 years (mean = 37.68 years) with a sex ratio of 2.12. The examination was normal in 10 patients. Hemorrhoids and anal fissure were found respectively in 73 and 28% of cases. Both lesions were more frequent in women (56.3% hemorrhoids, anal fissure 31.3), in men (80.9% hemorrhoids, anal fissure 26.5%), before (hemorrhoids 68% 24 crack %) and after 37 years (78.7% hemorrhoids, fissures 34%). Hemorrhoids were found in 23% of patients with anal fissure (p> 0.05). Compared with control subjects, patients complaining of proctalgia had statistically significantly more hemorrhoids (76.9% vs 50% p = 0.04) and anal fissure (26.9% vs. 3.6% p = 0, 01). Conclusion: hemorrhoids and anal fissure are two main lesions found during inaugural proctalgia at Cocody's university hospital. |
