| Abstract | 679 OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY IN SCHOOLCHILDREN: PREVALENCE STUDY IN GENERAL CABRERA (CÓRDOBA, ARGENTINA), 2014. 1Olmos M, 2Riva G, 3Tobler B, 4Tumas N, 5Román MD Persona que presenta: Román MD, doloresroman@gmail.com Abstract: Childhood overweight and obesity are a major public health problem in worldwide. In 2014, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Argentinean schoolchildren was 19% and 17.7%, respectively. Subnational variations of overnutrition burdens have been scarcely studied. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in schoolchildren (6-12 years old) in General Cabrera city (Córdoba, Argentina) by sex and school cycle in 2014. A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed. The anthropometric nutritional status (Body Mass Index for age, according to WHO, 2007) was assessed for the total number of children (n=1177) attending General Cabrera's elementary schools. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was calculated in the total population, and also by sex and school cycle. The results indicated that overnutrition affected 46.4% of the students: 16.7% overweight (95% CI 0.145-0.189) and 29.7% obesity (95% CI 0.271-0.324). The prevalence of overweight and obesity was higher in males (p<0.05 and p<0.10, respectively). In first cycle (1st to 3rd grade) the burden of overweight was 20% (95% CI 0.17-0.235) and 28% obesity (95% CI 0.244-0.317). In the second cycle (4th to 6th grade), 13% of the students were overweight (95% CI 0.102-0.159) and 31% obese (95% CI 0.278-0.356). Overweight burden showed significant differences between first and second cycles (p<0.05). The prevalence of overweight and obesity in General Cabrera's schoolchildren is high, with differences by sex and school cycle. The implementation of measures for health promotion, prevention and treatment of this multifactorial problem is recommended, in order to give children the opportunity to reach their maximum potential for growth, development and well-being. |
