| Abstract | The study assessed the perception of rural dwellers on the nutritional and medicinal value of mushroom in Ogo-Oluwa Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. Multistage sampling technique was adopted in the selection of 96 respondents for the study. Structure interview schedule was used to obtain necessary information from the sampled rural dwellers in the area. Data collected were analysed with both descriptive and inferential statistical tools. Most (38.5%) of the respondents were aged with different educational background, while 29.2% did not have formal education. The main occupation of most (57.3%) of the respondents is farming. Edible mushroom is an excellent source of high quality protein was ranked 1 st (X=3.94) with respect to perceived nutritional benefit associated to consumption of mushroom and consumption of mushroom makes one look healthier was ranked 1 st (X=3.77) with respect to perceived medicinal benefit of mushroom, while mushroom are used to treat long lasting sour was ranked least (7 th ). (X=1.68). The study recorded a significant relationship between age (X 2 =69.687; p0.05), marital status (X 2 = 190.458; p0.05), educational level (X 2 =33.583; p0.05) and household size (X 2 =87.500; p0.05) of rural dwellers and their perception of nutritional and medicinal value of mushroom. The study therefore recommends the need to create awareness on the nutritional and medicinal values of mushroom among the populace and country at large. A collaborative research work can be encouraged on the nutritional and medicinal benefits of different varieties of mushroom. |
