| Abstract | Size and structure analysis of dog population in San Martín de los Andes was carried out through a questionnaire survey, using stratified sampling techniques (9 strata and 624 urban plots) and random informant selection (870). Strata were ordered according to treasury value of plots (stratum 1 = 7 $/m2, 9 = 127 $/m2). Size of dog population was estimated in 5,480 and the amount of inhabitants per dogs was five. Dog abundance and density tend to increase in plots with lower values. Dog mean age was estimated in 4.9 yr., it increased in plots exhibiting higher values, and 58 % of dogs were 5 year old or less. The 21 % of dogs received treatment against parasites every 4 months or less and 28 % of dog females were castrated. The amount of independent and castrated dogs was 39 % of total population and they were located mainly in plots exhibiting lower values (strata 1 = 46 %, 9 = 26 %). The general situation concerning dogs in San Martín de los Andes is unsatisfactory according to international recommendations, and particularly, the humble urban districts are suffering the most disadvantageous conditions. |
