| Abstract | The present work aims to study salt stress effects on different agronomic, physiological and water status parameters in three caraway (Carumcarvi L.) ecotypes collected in the main Tunisian production region of El Mida, MenzelTemime and Souassi. Thus, these ecotypes were grown in pots under glasshouse at the National Agronomic Institute of Tunisia. A completely randomized experimental design was conducted as a factorial block with four replications. Increasing NaCl concentrations (0, 50, 100 and 150 mM)were added to the nutrient solution. The main results showed that vegetative growth measured mainly through height, number of leaves and leaf area, decreased significantly at 100 mMNaClforthe three ecotypes, and was more marked in the MenzelTemime ecotype concerning leaf area. As for the salt constraint impact on the plant photosynthetic activity, the results showed that the chlorophyll fluorescence and the chlorophyll and carotenoids contents were significantly affected when plants were subjected to 150 mMNaCl in the El MidaandSouassiecotypes. Finally, the plant water status evaluated through the determination of the relative water content, osmotic potential and membrane permeability of leaves, showed a significant variation in the three ecotypes and especially that of Souassi under salt stress (50 mMNaCl). Overall, these results indicate that caraway could tolerate until 50 mMNaCl (3 g/l) butif this concentration has been exceeded, it becomes sensitive to salt stress. |
