| Abstract | Isolation of essential oils from rhizome of Jeringau (Acorus calamus Linn) and the antibacterial activity assay against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) has been performed. Essential oil extraction was done by steam distillation method, antibacterial activity test was conducted by diffusion wells, and compound identification was conducted by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The essential oils with a concentration of 10% (v/v) showed a strong inhibitory activity against the growth of E. coli and S. aureus with diameter inhibition of 11.33 mm and 13.57 mm respectively. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the oils against E. coli and S. aureus was 4 and 0.4% respectively with the inhibition zone of 6.67 and 8.83 mm. The main compounds of the oils were euasaron and asaron known having antibacterial activity. |
