Abstract	Cascade reservoir operating rules are directly related to the performance of the hydroelectric generation systems since they define the order of reservoir filling and emptying, establishing storage and productivity levels in the cascade. In Brazil the operating rules adopted in the official models follow the parallel operation of the reservoirs but the operation verified in the post operation data generally follows the rule of giving storage priority to upstream plants. In order to evaluate the performance of the operating rules of cascade reservoirs based on post-operative data this dissertation proposes a methodology composed of two simulations of the system with individualized plants representation under the inflows of a certain period of the past. The first simulation reproduces the post operation by following the verified storage reservoir trajectories. The second simulation reproduces the same hydroelectric generation of the first one using alternative operating rules. Two case studies were selected for the application of the proposed procedure: the Tietê-Paraná Waterway from May 2009 to December 2015 and the São Francisco River basin from May 2009 to December 2016. The simulations carried out with alternative rules to the rule adopted in practice show a greater efficiency in reservoir cascade management, in one case avoiding the clousure of the Tietê-Paraná waterway, and in the other case mitigating the critical energy situation in the São Francisco River.
