| Abstract | The seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic fungal usually characterized by flaking and itching in areas with sebaceous glands, is caused by the fungus Malassezia spp, considered as normal flora of the skin, but in certain conditions such as humidity, poor hygiene, among other, it appears as opportunistic causing this is and other diseases. Because in our environment there are factors such as the afore mentioned cases of this disease are found, it gives importance to the identification of Malassezia using laboratory tests and therefore the present study that had as issue to identify Malassezia spp., in patients attending the Isidro Ayora Loja Hospital, determine the causes seborrheic dermatitis in them and know the age group in which it occurs most often seborrheic dermatitis caused by Malassezia spp., for was realiced a cross-sectional study, with a sample of 53 patients, using direct techniques as application of potassium hydroxide KOH 10%to the samples, cultivation Sabouraud Agar with olive oil, Catalase and Gram stain, concluding that 7.5% of patients had Malassezia spp, also was identified the main causes that favored its colonization were, the stress 55% , to reside with pets by 42%, to live in humid or cold areas 32%, families transmission 28%, and to have to oily skin type in a 19%, with respect to age group the disease was found in adulthood with 75%(comprised from 20 to 65 year), while the lowest percentages found in childhood (1 to 12 years old). With the object to avoid false positives was avoid taking the sample of patients receiving antifungal treatment, moreover respect strictly time and temperature necessary for the growth of microorganisms.
