| Abstract | Climate variability and extreme events associated with its (frost, hail, droughts) result in serious damage to agricultural production, requiring several years for an economic and financial recovery. Two important events recently occurred in Uruguay were the droughts of 1999 - 2000 and the one of 2008 - 2009 where losses were estimated between 200 and 250 million dollars (around 1% of the GDP) and 400 to 800 million (between 2% and 3% of GDP) respectively. Thus, climate variability in Uruguay is a very relevant factor and its analysis and characterization is critical to climate risk management. This study aimed to quantify the components of long-term trend, decadal and inter-annual variability of climate variables considered relevant in farming, in different periods of the year and in certain areas of Uruguay. As the main conclusion and according to the results, for every analyzed variable and in every location and period, the inter-annual variability was the most important one. |
