| Abstract | This article provides an overview and rationale for the development of automated essay scoring (AES) and associated spin-off technologies including electronic portfolios, support for English-language learners, and the automated scoring of spoken responses. AES is the ability of the computer to evaluate written responses. Until recently, this capability had been restricted to the English language, but now both assessment and feedback can occur in multiple languages. All of these technologies can be used for placement, diagnostic, and low- and high-stakes testing. In addition, the technologies have been successfully integrated into the writing curricula. The article describes the technologies, gives examples of their application, and illustrates research that has evaluated their efficacy. |
