| Abstract | The aim of this work was evaluate the stability of heart rate variability (HRV) during sleep by means of a combination of the moving polynomial filter method for the estimation of HRV and the change point analysis method. Eighteen healthy adults (M = 24 yrs. old, SD = 4) participated in this study. Samples of cardiac activity were chosen from distinct sleep stages, and then HRV components were calculated for different time intervals. Subsequently, all time intervals were analyzed using the change point analysis method, and the stability was related to the intervals which showed less changes. It was observed that each interval of time applied for HRV estimation modified the number of detected changes; specifically the changes decreased in correspondence with long intervals of time. REM sleep showed more changes and therefore less stability than NREM sleep. With this methodological proposal is possible to evaluate the stability of autonomic regulation of cardiovascular activity during sleep, but more studies are necessary in order to confirm its validity. |
