| Abstract | This papcr summarizcs thc findings on mortality undcr two years of agc in 12 Latin American countnes, cstimatcd tlirough Brass method as applied mostly t o population ccnsuscs. Dcath risks are heterogeneously high, excceding 120 pcr 1000 livc births, and reach maximum valucs in thc Andcan and Ccntral Amcrican Rcgions. In gcncral, rural deaths ratcs arc highcr than urban oncs. Thc greatest diffcrcntials are obscrvcd in rclation to cducational lcvcl of women, which is considcrcd an indcx of living conditions. Al1 countnes taken togcthcr, a high mortality populatmn is idcntificd, where rates excced 120 pcr thousand lifc births. 50 pcr ccnt of ail shildren are born, and 67 pcr cent of al1 dcaths undcr two ycars are estimated t o occur in that population. This group is composed primarily of illiteratc (or almost iilitcratc) womcn, of predominatcly rural residcncc, including al1 thc idcntificd indigcnous populations. That population stratus is thc corc of the problcm of high infant and child mortality in Latin America. This situation is mainly detcrmined by structural and histoncal conditions, whick keep extcnsivc population sectors under a physical, biological, and social environment particularly agressivc for their sunival, and, on the othcr hand, hamper the wide application of existing mcdical knowlcdge to prevent sickness and deaths. |
