| Abstract | The negative hero has been an important character of the hispanic novel from its beginning, the first antihero being the “Periquillo Sarniento”. the relantionships established in the postcolonial sociaty didn't change anything in this respect In the case of two XIX th Century Mexican novels, Los bandidos de Rio Frio and Astucia it is very clear how the social reality contributes to the popularity of this kind of character . These are novels with an important potential for symbolism, that trough their protagonists express a heavy social critic and sustain a modern and liberal society. The bandit becomes an obstacle in the way of the construction of a modern estate. That is why the destiny of a bandit can only be his defeat or his transformation into an honest citizen. |
