A model component of biomass is fructose, derived from cellulose, which can be dehydrated to HMF via acid catalysis. Solid acid catalysts provide an efficient route for the production of HMF. In particular, solid acid catalysts are advantageous to their homogenous counterpart since they can easily be separated from the effluent and used in continuous flow systems. However, minimizing acid site leaching and achieving high yields to HMF, comparable to classical homogenous systems, remain as major challenges. [1] |
