| Abstract | In this study, the results of the implementation of the European common currency in terms of the German economy are discussed. The Euro was put into circulation in 1999 and started to be used as banknotes and coin on 1 January 2002. Monetary union and monetary areas are the agreements that make use of the same currency by abandoning the use of national currencies and monetary policies of the member countries. It can be said that the most important advantage of the monetary union for all countries is to reduce the transaction cost. Optimal currency area theory provides the theoretical foundations for the effects of monetary union, more precisely for the benefit and cost analysis of joining the monetary union. An analysis of the benefits and costs of Germany being included in the monetary union; although negative results are observed in the initial phase, positive results are observed in the later periods. Moreover, the econometric studies show that the Euro Union will have favorable results for the German economy. |
