| Abstract | Towards the end of the 19th century the members of the Instituto Medico Nacional modernized and edited manuscripts produced by the Real Expedicion Botanica a la Nueva Espana (Royal Botanical Expedition to New Spain) that had taken place between 1787 and 1803. The new edition of these materials had an impact both at national and international level. We will show that during this period, studies in botany, in accordance with the nation’s research agenda, were strongly influenced by the perspective of medicine and pharmacology. Scientists dove into the documents of the Real Expedition, rescuing important materials from oblivion and modernizing them, because they considered they contained fundamental knowledge for medicine, pharmacy and botany. They recognized the value of that material, and so must we, thus it is imperative that we retrieve and publish the documents of this expedition. |
