| Abstract | The aim of this study was to research young adults’ opinions about participation, occupation and social inclusion on social media, as well as young peoples’ opinions of what effects the use of social media have on their mental health. The research questions for the thesis are; What kinds of participation do young adults think are present on social media? In what way do young adults describe social media as an occupation? What kind of social inclusion do young adults think are present on social media? What is the meaning of the effect from mental health on social media according to young adults? The commissioner of this thesis is PAD – Positive Attitude Development. The purpose of the PAD project is, among other things, to reduce the stigma of mental illness in young adults. The target group for the survey were young adults ages 18-29 who use social media. In the thesis background and previous research, the following subjects have been dealt with; social media, young adults, mental health, depression as a result of using Facebook and positive and negative aspects of social media. The theoretical frame of reference for this degree was participation, occupation and social inclusion. A quantitative survey has been applied in this study. The respondents were reached by using the so-called snowball sampling method on Facebook. The survey was created and formed on Google Forms. The survey received a total of 164 answers. The result of the survey showed that young adults think it is enjoyable to spend time on social media. Young adults tend to upload pictures on social media that they think other users will like. Young adults experience fellowship and create new friendship through social media. Young adults consider it easier to express themselves on social media and they are aware of what kinds of social rules exist on social media. They experience the use of social media as a habit. Today's youth use social media, among other things, as a tool for finding information about health. |
