| Abstract | To better understand why so few students of color and women study computer science during high school and college, we have interviewed urban students, teachers, and administrators in three Los Angeles high schools over the past three years. One important finding of this study was the lack of clarity around the nature of computer science as an academic, scientific field. This article will discuss the incongruities in the translation of computer science into high school classrooms and the potential of university-school relationships to help educate school systems about this increasingly critical and modern scientific field. |
