| Abstract | Measurements were carried out of the vortex shedding frequency from a main cylinder in the presence of a small control cylinder using FFT analysis of time dependent LDA velocity data taken in the wake of the cylinder. The position of the control cylinder was varied in the radial and angular directions, behind and in front of the main cylinder and the Reynolds number was 10,000. The shedding frequency was seen to decrease when the control cylinder was located closer to the main cylinder both upstream or downstream, especially with a sealed gap, but with the highest reductions in the upstream configuration. This contrasts with the literature reporting reductions and even vortex suppression at Reynolds numbers less than 120, when the control cylinder is in a downstream position. Measurements with two control cylinders in a symmetric configuration are also reported. |
