| Abstract | A successful biological control program of insect pests in sugar cane in Costa Rica. The results of 12 years (1984 1995) research on the management of the principal insect pests of sugar cane, realized by the Entomology Program of the Research and Extension Area of Sugar Cane (DIECA), are presented. Also, management methodologies utilizing the parasitoid Cotesia flavipes, the entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana , as well as adhesive and light traps, crop practices for control of the borer (Diatraea spp.), the “salivazo” (Aeneolamia spp. and Prosapia spp.) and the “jobotos” (Phyllophaga spp.), are discussed. An analysis is performed of the strategies employed for the control of secondary pests, such as Castnia licoides, Elasmopalpus lignosellus, Metamasius hemipterus, Sacharosydne sacharivora, Mocis latipes and Spodoptera frugiperda. A cost:benefit analysis is presented for management activities of the borers Diatraea tabernella and Diatraea spp. Based on these experiences, recommendations are made for future research on the management of sugar cane pests, as well as outlines for the successful management of this program. |
