| Abstract | We show that a pair of subwavelength slits in parallel conducting plates supports a localized electromagnetic mode bound to the slits, whose spatial extent is determined not by the plates' size but by the slit dimensions. This mode occurs for electric fields parallel to the slits and plate separation slightly smaller than half the free-space wavelength. Finite element calculations and experimental results at 10 GHz show that the localized mode gives rise to a strong, narrowband resonant enhancement of the transmission which, while limited by conduction losses in the plates, is a factor of 104 larger than for off-resonant transmission. |
