| Abstract | Traversing, searching and sampling approaches have been investigated very much in graph theory and, then, applied in a large variety of research fields. However, in bioinformatics and biomedicine, sampling complex networks is a new and little investigated task. For instance, it is used to classify knowledge for creating semantic maps, summarizations and multi-label classifications, or to search motifs. In this article, first we introduce a formalism to represent complex networks. Then, we provide both three taxonomies of network sampling approaches and a brief overview to each of them. After this, we present a comparison of these approaches. Finally, we draw some conclusions and take a look at the future. |
