| Abstract | Introduction: In recent years concern has grown regarding the sleep patterns of college students. This portion of the population seems to have a higher propensity to maintain a inappropriate lifestyle, such as nocturnal habits, sedentary lifestyle and drug use during college and may result in problems related to sleep pattern. However, there is no ordering of the findings on the pattern of sleep and associated factors in Brazilian college students. Objective: To review the literature on sleep patterns and their relation to physical activity in Brazilian college students. Materials and methods: The search for manuscripts was performed in electronic databases, PubMed and SciELO and the search engine Google Scholar. Results: College students present themselves as a group at risk for developing sleep-related disorders, especially the excessive daytime sleepiness, and may impact directly on their health and their academic performance. As for the association between sleep and physical activity, due to the scarcity of national studies with college students could not determine if these variables are related, neither, what is the magnitude of this relationship. Conclusion: According to the findings of this review study, highlights the need for programs that provide conditions and encouraging more healthy sleep habits and practice regular physical activities aimed at improving health and quality of life of Brazilian college students as well as further research on the relationship between sleep and physical activity in this portion of the population. |
