| Abstract | INTRODUCTION: Acne vulgaris is one of the most common skin diseases, yet the full etiology is still unclear. There is no clear evidence on however skin care routines or the use of cosmetics are correlated to acne vulgaris. With this pilot study, we aim to map out the cosmetic procedures carried out by patients with acne to get a better understanding of how this should be further examined in the future to enable adequate information regarding the correlation between acne and cosmetics. METHOD: A group of 20 post adolescent patients with acne vulgaris were asked to answer a questionnaire, mainly focused on skin care routines and the use of cosmetics. The answers were compared to a group of 20 students without active facial acne. RESULTS: The group of patients with acne spends six times more money on cosmetics, clean their faces more frequently both with and without cosmetic products and apply makeup more often compared to the control group. DISCUSSION: Since there is a clear difference in the number of used procedures as well as the frequency of witch they are used between patients with and without acne there seems to be a correlation between acne and cosmetic procedures. However, this pilot study does not investigate causality. |
