| Abstract | This report presents data on crimes reported to or detected by NSW police from January 2000 to December 2002. The data were extracted from the Computerised Operational Policing System (COPS) of the NSW Police Service in January 2003. The report includes an overview of trends over the most recent two-year period for a selection of serious offence categories. The overview in this year's report indicates that of the sixteen major offence categories, only steal from retail store is trending upwards. In the two years to December 2002 the incidence of six offence categories showed significant downward trends. These offence categories were robbery without a weapon, robbery with a weapon not a firearm, break and enter - dwelling, break and enter - non-dwelling, motor vehicle theft and steal from motor vehicle. Due to a discontinuity in the recording of the offence category steal from person, trends for this offence category have been measured over a seventeen-month period from August 2001 to December 2002. The nature of the discontinuity is explained in the report. The incidence of steal from person showed no significant upward or downward trend over the seventeen months considered. |
