| Abstract | OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between health-related quality of life (HRQoL) with sex, age and place of study. METHODS: A total of 80 children aged 8 to 12 years old were selected, of whom 40 were eutrophic and 40 were obese or overweight. Quality of life was measured using the Brazilian version of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) questionnaire. Data were expressed as median, 25th and 75th percentiles, minimum and maximum. The Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the independent sample scores and, in the case of three or more independent samples, this was performed by the Kruskall-Wallis analysis of variance with the Dunn post-test. RESULTS: Regarding gender, it was found that obese or overweight girls present lower quality of life related to absolute health compared to boys of the same nutritional diagnosis. The ages with the lowest quality of life were 8 and 12 years. Children in the public service had HRQOL affected twice as much by obesity as children in private service. CONCLUSIONS: Sex did not influence the children's quality of life, however, a trend towards lower quality of life in the female sex was observed. Age was not a modifying factor. The place of study (public service) influenced the quality of life. |
