| Abstract | The thesis analyzes the role of performance-based financing approach (PBF) in the health reform process of DRC. Its originality relies in the complex adaptive systems (CAS) framework adopted to analyze DRC health system. Indeed, we assess the huge potential of CAS in supporting the construction of health systems and for understanding the dynamic of the system under PBF. By using mixed methods, this thesis explores potential explanatory theories, bringing some insights regarding the causes of dissension, paradoxical results and emergent behaviors within the health system under PBF. The thesis demonstrates that the CAS approach can provide a better understanding of PBF implementation process in DRC. Understanding the basics of the CAS can become a major asset in the strengthening of local health systems. |
