| Abstract | The aim of this study is to increase the awareness of how the professionals working in a residential care home can support the child ́s socia l sk lls and participation in everyday life. This thesis is made in cooperation with a res id ntial care home in southern Finland. The research questions are: How can the profession al with their work based on milieu therapy promote children ́s social skills and support childr en ́s participation in everyday life? Which are the challenges for the professional s to support the children ́s participation? The focus of this thesis lies on children of primary school age and on the perspective of the professionals. The framework of this th esis consists of social pedagogy and especially milieu therapy as a working method, as w ell as participation and social skills. A group interview with five professionals from a resid ential care home is used as a data collection method. The outcome is examined by using content analysis. The results of this study show that the milieu ther apy can be seen in everyday life at the resident ial care home in form of strict rules, limits, rout ines and activities. This leads to learning possibilities of social skills, which the individual needs to cope with in everyday life and to the possibility of perceiving participa tion. The professionals ac t as role models and their guidance is very important for the childr en`s learning of social skills. Focusing on the best for the child and according to the chil d protection law, the professionals discuss the children ́s wishes and expectations with th em. Nevertheless everyday life at the residential care home is quite adult centred and th ere are different views of the term child participation. The milieu therapy has its own chall enges. The professionals coping with their workload, lack of time and lack of personnel appear to be big challenges. Even the work with the parents of the children and every chi ld ́s unique personality and circumstances are considered as challenging. |
