This article proposes a broader look at the context in which the rural society of Lower Canada evolved during the first half of the nineteenth century. When considering the seigneuries, the author discovered changes suggesting an evolution towards a new kind of society, which was increasingly affected by urban and industrial factors, and by new relationships between populations, habitats, markets and industry. These changes affected mostly the Montreal area, dominated by an important urban market, but one can also find them elsewhere in the province. This brings to light new interpretations of its economy and culture. |
