Abstract	Objective: To identify the level of knowledge about the causes of diabetes mellitus, itis symptoms and consequences for men and women between 40 and 50 years of ages, it also aims to identify life style habits that may cause diabetes mellitus. The knowledge gained from this study will provide valuable information to health care providers for the prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus. Design and methods: The study was conducted in 3 different urban areas in Mexico. Six groups of women, six groups of men, three of doctors and three of paramedics were studied. Results: 1) The population unknown the causes and effects of the DM and the possibilities of chronic degenerative risks, they relations the glucose level and the powerful emotion with their origin. In the general health care the main topic is a poor preventive culture between the popula- tion, a fatalistic assumption of diseases and a medical visits resistance. The women go on with the medic more often than the men the most important causes there are pregnancy, delivery, perinatal and pediatric care. The diet concept has a restrictive connotation, it guess against traditional cuisine and those engaged in it are insolated from the familiar environment.
