Abstract	ABSTRACT: This is a qualitative study with patients in the Intensive Care Center of a Public Hospital in Joao Pessoa (PB). The aim of the study was to verify the meaning of the communication in Nursing. The data were obtained from interviews and analyzed by the therapeutic communication categories of the expression, clarification and validation group analysis bars. Among the communication techniques used by Nurses team, we found to use therapeutic the silence, to hear reflexively, to verbalize the acceptance, therapeutic use of the humor. The results allow inferring us that the communication techniques are a way for therapeutic relationship promoting, which is necessary to a better quality assistance care, allowing, thus, the patients’ needs identification.
