The process of the humanity's development implicates in the use of the natural resources generating impacts on the environment, what can rebound along the time as a limitation to the continuity of the own development process. A key condition to do and to measure the progress as the sustainability is what the people that make the decisions have a better access the important data. For that is had the indicators: instruments to simplify, to quantify and to analyze technical information and to communicate them to the several groups of users. The Global Agenda 21, in your Chapter 40, suggests the use of indicators that consider the evaluation of different sectorial parameters, for then, to have a solid base for the decisions makers, contributing to an autoregulated sustainability of the integrated systems of environment and development. The central question of this work is “is possible to evaluate the sustainability of the City of Lages (Santa Catarina, Brazil) through the Method of the Dashboard of Sustainability”. To reach this objective, the following specific objectives had been considered: to analyze the indicators considered in the Method of the Dashboard of Sustainability and to evaluate the relevance of the indicators considered in the Method of the Dashboard of Sustainability, as for the local sustainability. Initially, it was looked to understand the history of the city, with regard to economic, natural, social and institutional the factors. After that, the indicators suggested for the Method of the Dashboard had been evaluated how much its importance or does not for the sustainable local development and then, the indicators had been established to be employed in the chosen method. Selected the indicators, the following step was to look them in diverse sources and to work the found values to be adjusted to the methodology. As the results gotten in the analysis, Lages meets with ‘average’ performance of sustainability, but very if approaching to the had values as ideal (maximum). However, it is standed out that the biggest contribution of the adoption of this methodology is not only in the calculation of the IDS, but of the identification of the main vulnerabilities and potentialities that the city presents in the present time.
