| Abstract | In his novel Des hommes (2009), Laurent Mauvignier evokes the Algerian war (19541962), and the long-lasting trauma it has inflicted on its combatants. But refuting the genre of historical fiction, he chooses to distance himself from the context, in order to convey a dramatized and universal vision of the violence of war. Moving back and forth from the present of the 2000's to the past of war, he uses the motif of photography as an axel. The discordance between the ekphrasis of images, and the recollection of the moment in which they were taken, demystifies the apparent carelessness of the snapshots. By delving into the past, the story reveals what the photos do not show, and conjures an invisible and unspeakable space beyond the frame of the image. The novel thus orchestrates dual violence, specific to the Algerian war : to the violence of fighting and atrocities, is added the violence of silencing the veterans of this nameless war. |
